Warley Woods park and woodland is open 365 days a year. The golf course and café are closed only on Christmas Day.

The Pavilion

This is the public building in Warley Woods. It is home to the café, the public toilets in the park, the shop, The Alf Padgham (meeting) room and the Trust’s Office. There are toilet facilities which can be accessed in a wheelchair. The Pavilion is an old building and is built on a slope and has steps outside and in, but we have temporary ramps which can give access to all areas – just ring the doorbell outside the shop and we will put them in place. The Pavilion is located on the Lightwoods Hill car park. It is sometimes called the Club House, or even the Golf hut, but its official name is The Pavilion.

Opening Hours

The Pavilion has different hours in Summer and in Winter. The hours change when the clocks change. You will always find the shop open 9am – 4pm, but in Summer it opens as early as 7am at weekends and can close as late at 8pm. The café is open 9am – 3pm throughout the year.

Entrances and Car Parking

There is car parking to the north of the Park off Abbey Road and to the south off Lightwoods Hill. The postcode for sat nav is B67 5ED which takes you to the larger car park on Lightwoods Hill where there is the only designated parking for disabled visitors. There are pedestrian gates around the park – two on the west side on Harborne Road and two on Lightwoods Hill. The park is unfenced to the East on Barclay Road where there is access and roadside parking all along the perimeter.

From Birmingham (Corporation Street) and Bearwood (Bear Tavern)

• Services 127/128. Runs every 10 minutes [combined] during the day, Monday to Saturday
• Nearest Stop: Abbey Road, opposite Alexander Road, by the car park / meadow

From Bearwood (bus station)

• Service 447. Runs every 30 minutes during the day, Monday to Saturday

From Bearwood, (Bearwood Road / Sherwood Road)

• Service 448. Runs every 30 minutes during the day, Monday to Saturday
• Combined frequency of 447/448: every 15 minutes
• Nearest Stop: Lightwoods Hill, just beyond Beechwood Road, near pavilion entrance

From West Bromwich (town centre)

• Services 447/448. Combined frequency every 15 minutes through the day, Monday to Saturday

Locking up

Vehicle gates are locked in the evening at Abbey Road and on Lightwoods Hill. At Lightwoods Hill the gates are locked by a volunteer and they will not lock them until all cars have left. On Abbey Road the police lock the gate for us at 8pm and may lock a car inside if it is there after this time.

There is a small gate from the car park on Lightwoods Hill into the Woods. This is the only pedestrian gate which is locked and its locking times vary. It will not be locked before 4pm. If in doubt ask staff nearby at the Pavilion who can tell you its locking time for that day.

Pathways

There are a number of solidly surfaced paths which are suitable for buggies and wheelchairs. These run from entrance gate to entrance gate, so you can cross the park easily. There are also additional paths with are surfaced with semi loose material which would be suitable for most buggies and wheelchairs but may be harder to traverse. The site is formed by two sides of a valley and some gradients are steep.

What will you find if you visit?

The site is around 1/3 woodland which feels like you are out in the countryside. There is open grassland which is great for games for dogs to run. The slopes mean the site is very popular for sledging if there is snow. The 9 hole golf course is open to all and there are practice nets and putting areas. There is a children’s play area near the Abbey Road entrance and some swings for “older” visitors. We are currently creating an area for wildlife which will have information on what can be discovered there. The shop in the Pavilion sells a range of items – not only things you need for golf, but lots of gift, wildlife and doggy items.

There are two “trail” leaflets available: one which helps children and families discover the identity of many of the main tree species. There is also a trail which leads you around the historically important parts of the site and has illustrations of the buildings that used to exist.
